What financial support/assistance programs are available for someone living with breast cancer?
The financial challenges that patients with breast cancer and their families face are very real. Although it is a difficult to find the time or energy to review your options, it is very important to keep your family financially healthy.
Most breast centers have nurse navigators. The navigators not only help you navigate your treatment, they also help you navigate resources that are available to help with the financial challenges of being diagnosed with breast cancer. For hospital bills, you may want to talk with a hospital financial counselor. You may be able to work out a monthly payment plan or even get a reduced rate. You may also want to stay in touch with your insurance company to make sure costs are covered.
You can also go to the NCI database, Organizations that Offer Support Services, and search "financial assistance." Or call toll-free 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) to ask for help.
